6. Movie Thoughts: Weapons
An interview with the 2025 movie Weapons, directed by Zach Cregger. "...Is that a clown?" Close your eyes if spoilers scare you...although honestly they don't matter that much.

An interview with the movie Weapons.
Me: Is that a clown?
Weapons: No, it’s my aunt.
Me: But is it just your aunt?
Weapons: No, my aunt is also a clown.
Me: Why is she holding a stick?
Weapons: What stick?—oh that? That’s a weapon.
Me: Why does your aunt have a weapon?
Weapons: For the children.
Me: What children?
Weapons: The children hiding in the basement.
Me: Why are those children all hiding in the basement?
Weapons: Because they’re being hidden.
Me: Why are they being hidden?
Weapons: Because of my aunt.
Me: Why is the main character drinking all the time?
—actually, that much is clear.
Perhaps there was some symbolism in this movie that got lost on me, but I did at least enjoy the vicarious horror feels of being a publicly maligned schoolteacher trapped in a smallish town full of pointing fingers. She held her weight without being reduced to another burning question about “what’s happening?” But so much attention was put onto the “what’s happening” around her, and then never actually explored beyond some superficial, circular level, that the story left a lot to be desired.
